The highlight for 2026 is that I have been commissioned to write THE book on vegan self sufficiency by the world's most important publisher of gardening and self sufficiency books (amongst many other things!). I am going to need some help in the garden, while I spend some time scratching my head and trying to write in front of the computer. So, I am very keen on meeting people - individuals, couples, groups of friends - who would like to come and stay here for a longer stay. One, two, three or even six months. In this time, you will learn literally everything there is to know about how to do this crazy off grid thing from first principles, and without buying success from the store. But also, you can be extremely helpful in the production of this exciting new book coming out soon! Welcome to the Barracks. The Pirate Ben and The Barracks exist to contemplate climate change, the effects on humanity and all things that have life on this beautiful planet. My purpose is to answer two questions: What can we do to help ensure that collapse is as short as possible? Is there anything we can do this side of collapse to help the rebuilding process on the other side of collapse? Our existence is a philosophical necessity as much as it is a reclaimed army barracks in the middle of the forest with a crazy old pirate and rescue piggies. VEGAN. In the morning, we all work together in the vegetable garden. In the afternoon, you are free to explore a subject of learning, experience or development through practical means. Last year, we focussed heavily on building things - roundwood timber construction tomato house, fancy outside toilet, solar poered hot water system and more. This year, more of that but also a havy focus on textiles (how to grow a shirt); charcoal burning and the creation of terra preta anthropogenic soil; food preserving; alternative energies - electricity generation and storage, but also novel heating methods and sun capture; and the establishment of at least one herb garden, possibly three (medicinal, kitchen and rare herbs). We're figuring all this out by ourselves, with much intuition and a good deal of screwups. Don't think we are looking for experts. All levels of experience are welcome., including no experience! Just people with a fully switched on "I'll give that a go" genes. You can also come with your own ideas. We can talk about them in advance. Oh, and I am also starting to host events. If you're here for one of them, or just before or just after one, you can for sure also join in. We eat simply in the morning. Porridge is standard. There is usually a lot of fruit around! We grow almost all of our own food. Someone cooks for dinner, which is happy, substantial and vegan. Just to remind you, this is not a 5 star hotel. Last year we acquired running water (certified drinkable by the german authorities), and this year, we are hoping to build in hot water to go along with it. We have cold showers in the building, and slightly less cold if you do it bucket and water style in the polytunnel. The forest which surrounds us is beautiful, and in the autumn, full of mushrooms. I am almost entirely self sufficient in all things. The only thing needed from outside is YOU! All non-normative positive!
